"From Dope to Hope" panel - Honoring Upstanders

The New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum welcomed students from Tech Leadership Charter School to participate in a semester long arts integrated exhibit design program. The goal of this ongoing program is to empower students to explore and make personal connections with history by working with staff to develop a museum caliber exhibit. Students gain the benefit of exposure to museum career experience, collegiate-level research, and group collaboration.

For their exhibit this semester the students selected the topic of Upstanders. As defined by Merriam-Webster an Upstander is, “a person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied.” The students wanted to not only discuss injustice and intolerance but also to highlight those who have taken a stand against it.

Covering a variety of topics ranging from drug addiction, the early American Suffragette movement, to the Chicano movement, Honoring Upstanders highlights the work and activism of seven individuals who left a positive mark on history. The exhibits cover the history and important impacts of these individuals and how they have helped to improve society by being and Upstander.  We hope through this exhibit you can learn more about what it means to be an Upstander and that you too will be inspired to be an Upstander today.
