This one-day professional development conference will explore some of the many possible approaches to teaching the Holocaust and connecting WWII history to New Mexico. Intended for grade 6-12 educators in history, social studies, and English language arts, this professional development will equip teachers with the tools they need to teach the Holocaust and other difficult subjects in ways that fit their classrooms.
Workshops will include:
Kristin Hallahan from the Institute of Curriculum Studies (ICS) on teaching with primary sources in the classroom. ICS specializes in providing resources for educators on Judaism and Jewish history.
The New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League, which works to preserve and uplift the rich culture and history of Japanese-Americans, on Japanese-American incarceration in New Mexico.
Jake Newsome, Ph.D, founder of the Pink Triangle Legacies Project, on the treatment of homosexuals and members of the queer community by the Nazis. His non-profit is a grassroots initiative that both honors the memory of the queer and trans victims of the Nazi regime and works to fight homophobia and transphobia today through education and advocacy.
